Choice
Why do we do the things we do? Why are we the people we are? Why do we perform in such a way that we can maybe someday call ourselves successful? And even when we reach that success, why are we never satisfied with it? Or why are we? We had a discussion previously in one of my high school classes about the reason why we have the characteristics that make up our personality we have today? Are we just born with them, or do the influences around us make us like that?
Well, I think it really is a mix of both. We are kind of born with our own unique personality. Yes, maybe from the start, it looks as if we are all just crying babies. But as we grow, we react and handle to different things in many ways. And many could argue that that the people around us could be affecting every choice we make. A toddler may mimic his father by yelling because he can't have any candy. But consider siblings born in the same situation. Obviously it won't be in the EXACT same situation as the other sibling, but it will have the same kind of influences. But all siblings act differently even to this day even as much as they share the same beliefs and values.
On the other hand, influence is a BIG aspect in a person's, or child's development. It's funny how as much as we don't want to act like our parents, we act the most like them. Siblings and friends also play a big part in that development, and what we see through the media and the people outside the home. There are so many possibilities that can influence who we are. It can range from our favorite show to the person next door.
But here's the problem: How can a person go from knowing and following their family beliefs to completely straying a different way? Well, other influences outside the family is part of that and so is CHOICE.
I think the reason people do the things they do, perform the way they perform, and act the way they act is because of their choice to do so. I know many people (they shall remain anonymous) today who blame their family on their failures in life. The reason why so and so is a lazy bum is because his mother didn't teach him anything about picking up around the house, for example. But I have to disagree with this. His mother may have influenced him to act in that way, but unless he makes that choice to do stuff for himself, he's not getting anywhere in life.
People use the same excuse for the reason that they're poor. But I've heard many success stories come from people who used to live in the dumps. And I doubt any of the stories didn't require at least some trial or rough patch. So this is just to tell all those people who use their family as an excuse for their situation that it's still YOUR choice to act on it; to decipher the wrong and the right. And what your parents teach you isn't always right. That's why you have to know who you are and it's hard, but you'll feel good when you know it's right. Signing off, Peace!
