10 Reasons Why you Should Serve an LDS Mission! :)

So this blog post was definitely an idea that came into my mind, therefore, I give credit to the Holy Ghost and not to myself. But my writing is kind of awesome... I attribute that gift to Heavenly Father, and myself for developing those talents. All in all, God is the whole reason this blog post came to be.

Here it is! Ten reasons why you should serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. For those nonmembers reading this, in order to serve a mission, you need to be a member of the church! It's really simple, unless you make it complicated. God will tell you if it's right for you! I'm a convert to the church as of about 5 years and I am grateful to have everything I need to be happy in this life. Here are the links to learn more: Mormon.org or Lds.org

I know that there are some of you, no matter how old, who are contemplating serving a mission. Some of you might have fears, doubts, or wondering if it's God's plan for you. Maybe you have prayed about it and haven't gotten the answer yet, or the answer came and you didn't like it! Let me tell you something! I UNDERSTAND. I think there are many like you who feel the same way. And if not, I definitely did as I was preparing to serve a mission. Here's some things I have learned as someone who had the experience of serving an LDS mission.

1. You get a heck of an understanding of The Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ. Personal studies are an hour (plus additional studies) on your mission. The Book of Mormon is one of the main approved readings that you have and doing that everyday for a year and a half, you'd be surprised of the amount of knowledge and spirit you can gain from that. And you get a clear understanding of the main doctrine we learn in the church because of Preach My Gospel!

2. Cause God said so. If you have a desire, GO! God gave you that desire. It's not going anywhere. I also heard this once in a singles ward from a teacher and she said "Even if you WANT to have a desire to do something, do it." D&C 4:3 says, Therefore, if he have desires to serve God ye are called to the work.

3. You can strengthen the talents that you already have. Yes. No matter what your talents are, I am a writer, and I was just recently told that my writing has improved after my mission. Someone in my mission used their skills as an artist to create a unifying piece for the mission. God just blesses you!

4. You get to work through your weaknesses. The mission will bring out your weaknesses, and I have heard a lot of missionaries tell me that. It's true. Personally, the mission helped bring out those weakness, but it helped me to build a greater relationship with God and realize that I can turn those weaknesses he gave me into strengths. (Ether 12: 28)

5. A quote I heard on my mission was "It is a privilege to serve the Lord all the time for 2 years of your life." It's only 2 years/18 months out of your life, and dude...Christ gave up everything for us. Don't we at least want to give up a couple years for him? You get to forget about yourself and the technology and Instagram and Facebook and all of that...and serve his children for 2 years or 18 months. It's very freeing and you just feel happy all the time because of it.

6. You meet the coolest people! haha. And I am a firm believer in the idea that we are destined to meet particular people when we come to this Earth, not only for them but for our own growth! There are people I know I was meant to meet on my mission. There are people you might be meant to meet too! And you will remember the relationships you build FOREVER.

7. As soon as you enter the MTC (missionary training center), you are surrounded by missionaries! Being around missionaries the same age as you who have a desire to bring good to the world brings such a power and spirit to your life! You just feel like this giant army that can't be stopped! And the MTC is also a really fun place to be...well depending on if you are learning a language or not...haha. Then maybe sometimes it can be stressful.

8. Companions. Sometimes you have a good companion. And then sometimes you don't. But let's be real, both types of companions prepare you for the biggest step you will make in life: Marriage! Not only that, but companions help you to grow and Heavenly Father truly knows what he is doing when he puts you with someone total opposite of you! Being with a person 24/7 seems weird at first, but trust me, you get used to it and it becomes one of the things you will miss the most when your mission is over. I was blessed with amazing companions on my missions and I feel like it will carry me with all of my other relationships in life.

9. The mission helps you get jobs. Okay, this shouldn't be the main reason you go, just so you can put it on your resume. But it is a perk to serving. You gain all of these life/job skills such as setting goals, leadership opportunities, establishing relationships of trust with people, making a good impression and learning basic communications skills.

10. You have a greater understanding of the purpose of life. You grow up. Some music and some shows you have outgrown. You start to get the emotional messages attached to all movies. And you realize what is truly important in life like relationships with family and friends and service to others.

Well, those are my ten reasons. A mission isn't meant for everyone; Heavenly Father loves us all regardless whether we serve a mission or not! But If you have any more reasons, I'd be happy to hear from them in the comments section below!

Love
Alicia
